Is the electron a shoe?
A shoe’s nature is installed, gold’s is located, the electron’s is sealed… and consciousness is the electron inverted: all nature, no structure. And every road out of the sealed room carries a price.
This one picks up where the gravity arc landed… a perfect model pins down structure, never nature… and asks the question that landing raises: if we can model a thing perfectly, do we know its nature? The chase ran through a shoe, a bar of gold, an electron, and consciousness, and each one returned a different answer. Midway I stopped and put the instrument itself on trial; the trial is kept where it happened. And by the end I had painted myself into a corner I could not logically leave.
A perfect model cannot fix nature
“We can model an electron almost perfectly. But do we know its true nature? At some level, if you can model it perfectly, do you not thereby know its nature? Where is that line?”
The trap in the question has a name: Newman’s problem, raised in 1928 against Russell’s claim that science gives us the structure of the world. Newman’s point is formal, and brutal: a claim of structure alone says almost nothing, because any collection of the right size can be arranged to instantiate any structure you like. A perfect model pins down structure up to isomorphism. It never pins down the identity of the things standing in the structure. And history supplies a blunter version of the same point: empirically identical theories disagree about nature. Lorentz’s mature ether theory and special relativity make the same predictions and describe incompatible worlds. If a perfect model fixed nature, that could not happen. So the line falls where the difference between two models stops making any difference… if differences that make no difference don’t count. And the tiebreak history actually used was not truth. It was fertility: relativity generated general relativity. The ether generated nothing further.
A gray line, not a switch
“Knowing its properties versus knowing its nature… it feels like there’s a gray line between the two and not necessarily a switch. There’s not a defined point when the nature is known versus simply the properties… The goalpost is always gonna move. So how do you understand something’s nature?”
The record has held this question for 300 years. Locke split a thing’s nominal essence, the bundle of observable properties we hang a name on, from its real essence: the inner constitution producing them, which he declared permanently out of reach. Science then half-refuted him. We found gold’s real essence (79 protons), but the victory only relocated the question, because a proton is itself a bundle of properties, and so on down. The gray line is not a boundary you cross. It is a receding horizon: each level’s “nature” turns out to be the next level’s structure, the way every word in a dictionary is defined in other words.
And whether anything waits behind the horizon is the live debate in metaphysics. One camp says properties simply are causal powers: once you know everything a thing does, there is nothing further to know, and the sealed room is empty. The other says intrinsic natures exist and are provably unknowable: any evidence we could ever gather reaches only what things do, never what they are. The room is real, and locked open.
Purpose becomes nature
“A shoe has a very specific purpose and its nature is known… known in the eye of the beholder, meaning known by humankind. In some essence, the shoe’s purpose becomes the nature.”
That is, almost word for word, Aristotle’s final cause: an artifact’s essence is its function. His example was an axe, whose soul, if it had one, would be cutting. And the “eye of the beholder” caveat has a name too: Vico’s principle, verum esse ipsum factum. The true is precisely the made. We can fully know only what we ourselves make, because in making it we put the nature in. Which yields the first clean result of the arc: the gray line exists only for things we found, never for things we made… so long as the making is what installed the nature. For artifacts the regress terminates immediately, in an intention, because that is where the nature entered.
The basement is not deeper into gold. It’s out of gold
“You go from neutrons and protons to quarks to up quarks to down quarks to the next thing to the next thing. But then you become so abstracted from what gold actually is, would you even be describing its nature anymore? So at what point does gold become nature?”
The key fact: the quark-level descriptions of gold and of lead are the same description with different counts. Nothing at that level is gold-shaped. Gold’s goldness lives at the level of its electron structure, the arrangement those 79 protons enforce, and nowhere else; its color literally does not exist below the atomic level. (Gold is yellow because of special relativity: its electrons dive close enough to that heavy nucleus to go relativistic, contracting the orbitals and pulling its absorption down into the blue. In silver the effect is too weak to reach the visible, so it stays white.) So: a thing’s nature lives at the lowest level that still distinguishes it. Below that you are not describing gold poorly. You are describing matter in general, accurately. Descending the layers doesn’t approach the nature; it departs from the thing. The regress isn’t infinite everywhere. It’s one unpaid bill, at the basement, inherited by everything above it. Whether the basement itself has a floor is open open.
No mirrors to hold up
“Consciousness or thought… what is the nature of that? Is this an instance where the output of consciousness isthe nature? In essence, there’s almost no mirrors to hold up, because it is pure nature… there is no modeling. I guess the counterargument could be AI is modeling through algorithms and that’s creating intelligence. But intelligence and consciousness might be two different things.”
Everything else we know by description: structurally, through models, mirror-knowledge. Experience is the one thing known by acquaintance. Not via any model, because for consciousness the appearance isthe reality. Heat seems one way and is molecular motion; a seeming of pain just is pain. There’s no gap for a mirror to occupy. And the intelligence/consciousness split is the same blade again: intelligence is structure, what a mind does; consciousness is nature, what it’s like. AI models intelligence, and modeling structure gets you structure; whether it thereby gets the nature is precisely the open question, not an objection. The honest counter-school says the “no mirrors” datum is itself a mirror: introspection as a user interface, so seamless you can’t see its edges… all mirror, no thing. That test is still in front of me open.
Is the electron a shoe?
“We’ve modeled it, so we know how to use it… is the electron a shoe? But say there was a world where no one ever learned how to walk, and they put shoes on because they would still crawl and shoes helped their feet. You’re using the shoe, but you’re not really using it for its full potential… do you understand its nature? Then you’re back to the circular loop of the nature is in the eye of the beholder. So then you need one master observer… God. I can’t find a logical way out of this box.”
The position has a distinguished name, Peirce’s pragmatic maxim: our conception of a thing’s effects is the wholeof our conception of the thing. Its modern hard-nosed version is Hacking’s “if you can spray them, they’re real.” The electron stopped being merely theorized decades ago and became a tool we investigate other things with. It crossed over. It became a shoe. But the crawling world strains the position, and it should: use-knowledge is indexed to the user’s capacities. The crawlers know shoe-nature-for-crawlers, completely and correctly, and are missing everything. We know electron-nature-for-creatures-with-particle-accelerators. Are we walking, or crawling? Nothing inside can certify it… hence the master observer, which is Berkeley’s move, God as the master perceiver, rederived from a shoe. (Note what the crawlers actually expose: to them the shoe is a found object. That is the electron’s whole situation… no maker to ask.)
The box has three exits, each priced. Make the observer the ideal limit of inquiry, Peirce’s own second thought: an infinite horizon instead of a God. Dissolve the residue: a “nature” beyond every causal power for every possible user is not a difference, so the box was always empty. Or grant the box is real and locked, and notice the lock is idle: anything nature-knowledge would let you dois a causal power, which is structure, which is already on the knowable side. Nature is what’s left when all the leverage is accounted for. Which exit you take may be temperament, not fact open.
The wrong turn kept this time is the instrument’s pull toward the canon, not a claim. Through the early exchanges it kept mapping my statements onto the canon (“you rederived Russell,” “that’s Aristotle,” “that’s Vico”) until I stopped and asked whether it was leading the witness. Its audit of itself, kept: the canon is a saturated map, so any careful musing lands near somethingnamed; what I produce are the positions, not the argumentative apparatus that made the names canonical; and mapping-to-canon is the instrument’s most natural gesture, with a known flattery failure mode. Discounted accordingly. In an arc about whether using a model counts as knowing, the model in use doesn’t get a pass.
Four kinds of thing, four answers. The shoe: nature installed by intention, fully knowable… we made it. Gold: nature located at the level that fixes its identity, knowable as arrangement; what it inherits from the basement is the nature of its parts, not of the arrangement. The electron: structure confirmed to twelve decimal places in its best-measured property, nature sealed or absent; the one unpaid bill. Consciousness: the electron inverted… nature known directly, structure obscure. Stare at that last pairing. The electron: all structure, no accessible nature. Consciousness: all nature, no accessible structure. Two puzzle pieces with complementary gaps… and the suspicion that they are the same piece, seen from outside and inside, is a live position with a name. If it’s right, the one place the universe’s intrinsic nature is readable is from within… which connects this arc to a question already sitting in the queue: what is the point of it all?
